Portland police arrest 44 in human trafficking patrols along 82nd Ave.
Portland police say 44 people were arrested during directed patrols along Northeast 82nd Avenue and Northeast Sandy Boulevard since June.
The missions were in response to community complaints and reported activity tied to sex trafficking, according to the Portland Police Bureau.
The effort included the bureau’s Human Trafficking Unit, East and Central precincts, detectives and victim advocates, along with the Multnomah and Washington county sheriff’s offices, Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office, parole and probation officers, Port of Portland police, the FBI, Homeland Security Investigations, Safety Compass and the Providence S.A.F.E. Center.
Police said the 44 people were arrested on allegations of commercial sexual solicitation and unlawful prostitution procurement. A few people were also arrested on outstanding warrants, including felony warrants, and one person was also accused of driving under the influence.
In a separate six-month mission from April to October, the Human Trafficking Unit said officers made 555 contacts with people believed to be selling sex. Police said 139 people were offered advocacy services and resources to leave prostitution.
Officers also said they gathered information on possible buyers, traffickers and ongoing investigations.
The bureau said it will keep working with Safety Compass and its Victim Services Unit on street outreach.
